Zerg is a very fast BLAST parser library written in C with the help of the Flex lexical analyzer generator. It parses the output from all NCBI BLAST programs (Blastn, Blastp, Blastx, Tblastn and Tblastx). It is optimized for speed, being especially useful for large-scale genomic analysis. Zerg written in C and in Perl were faster than the engine provided by either BioPerl or Boulder. Zerg parse confers the ability to detect corrupt or truncated report files because it is based on a single regular expression that matches an entire BLAST report. Using UNMATCHED, a special token code, permits Zerg to decide how to handle inconsistencies in BLAST output files. But this current version of Zerg only recognizes NCBI BLAST file format.
